Gearing Up: Cooler Weather

Aug 30, 2021

hoa maintenanceFall is a great time to be outside and an important lawn care season for your property. Our field teams are gearing up for cooler weather, falling leaves and shorter days.

Right now, cool season lawns like fescue are tired from the long, hot summer, while warm season grasses, like bermudagrass and zoysia are enjoying their peak season. Because these lawns are so different, we follow different approaches to preparing them for the winter ahead.

Also different this year is the effect COVID-19 is having on supplies and prices. Similar to other industries, lawn care production supplies from vendors have slowed and prices for items, such as seed, fertilizer and the like, have spiked.

Fescue Lawns

Turf renovations for fescue lawns require several steps beginning in late summer that are now under way. First, we spray stubborn summer weeds that pushed through spring weed control treatments. A few weeks later, we aerate and overseed the entire lawn area and wait for Mother Nature (or the irrigation system) to encourage the newly sown seed to germinate. We stay off this tender grass for a few weeks, focusing our efforts on planting beds, pruning and other work around your property. Finally, after the seed has germinated, we cut the newly seeded fescue lawns a few more times before the leaves come down in earnest.

As the weather cools and the days shorten, we begin to stretch out our mowing intervals to allow these lawns to sustain their rich green color deeper into the fall season. Unlike fescue lawns, bermudagrass and zoysia do not require annual overseeding. Later, we spray for any weeds that germinated in the fall and include a pre-emergent weed control treatment to prevent any winter weeds from growing during the cooler months ahead.

Fall is also a time for looking back on the growing season and continually improving our lawn care services for next season. Cody, Mike, Luis and our field teams appreciate the opportunity to work with you and your team, and ask that you contact us with comments, ideas and suggestions, specifically for your property or SouthernEEZ as your lawn care provider. After all, it takes a team!

Fall is also a time for contract renewals, lawn care proposals and referrals. Like our best employees, our best clients are often connected to us through your referrals, which are always appreciated.

Thank you for your clientship … and see you outside this fall!
